In the fall of 1971 with the raising of the old Franklin County Jail, an era ended. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office transferred it's operation from the old overcrowded and dilapidated jail, to a modern house of detention. The new facility represented the most progressive design consistent with correctional standards and practices of it's time. The newly named Franklin County Corrections Center I was constructed at a cost of over 6 million dollars. At the time due to a lack of funds, the 5th and 6th floors were not completed. Finally in 1979, both the 5th and 6th floors were finished and open for operation which housed an additional 220 prisoners. In 1996-97, the Franklin County Corrections Center I received it's first major renovation. With each floor being approximately 14,000 square feet, it took nearly 18 months to complete this project. F.C.C.C.I currently houses up to 643 prisoners of which over 95% are Felons. The remaining prisoners are housed at F.C.C.C.II.

As a result of overcrowding at the Franklin County Corrections Center I, the Franklin County Commissioners approved the funding for the construction of a second Corrections Center facility. Opening in 1986, the Franklin County Corrections Center II is a 1,671 bed facility. Approximately 70% of it's population are Felons. Deputies and Civilians assigned to both facilities are responsible for the security, safety, feeding, medical treatment, and social service needs of all prisoners.
