Citizens Academy

The Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy is an opportunity for citizens to gain insight into the daily functions and responsibilities of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Our goal is to provide familiarization of procedures, guidelines, responsibilities, demands, policies and laws that guide the decisions and behavior of our deputies.

Course Curriculum

• Week 1: Introduction and Overview
• Week 2: Patrol and Patrol K9 Unit
• Week 3: Civil and Detective Bureau
• Week 4: Warrants and CLO and CRB (Community Liaison and Community Relations Bureau)
• Week 5: Therapy K9 and CID, (Community Intervention and Diversion)
• Week 6: SIU-Drug Awareness and SWAT
• Week 7: Bomb and Dive
• Week 8: Drone and Mounted Unit
• Week 9: Corrections and CORE Team
• Week 10: Internal Affairs and Deadly Force
• Week 11: Simulator/Scenarios/Stops and Approaches
• Week 12: Simulator/Scenarios/Stops and Approaches
• Week 13: Graduation

One session will be conducted for the calendar year 2024, from September to December. There will no be class the week of Thanksgiving and graduation will be the beginning of December. Attendance is mandatory for graduation. You must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply. Seats are limited. All applicants are required to submit to a background check.

Volunteering

As a continued effort in building more cohesive relationships between law enforcement officers and the community, our graduates have the opportunity to attend community events and DUI Taskforce Checkpoints alongside our deputies.

Automatic Disqualifiers

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office will not consider the application of any individual who;

• Has known criminal history to include, but not limited to: outstanding warrants, felony conviction, history of theft, public intoxication or repeated offenses, convicted of violent misdemeanor offenses (i.e. domestic violence, assault, menacing), subject of a protective order, conviction of no operator's license or driving under suspension within the last two years
• Has been convicted of any offense that would be a felony if committed in Ohio
• Has used illegal drugs within the last 12 months
• Has illegally sold marijuana or other substances within the last two years
• Has falsified his or her application in its entirety
• Any conduct or pattern of behavior that would tend to disrupt, diminish or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement profession
