FCSO investigates scammers posing as law enforcement officer

Wednesday, June 25, 2025

Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are investigating several scam cases reported in June where people were contacted by phone by a man who identifies himself as a law enforcement officer. He says they or a family member have an outstanding warrant for their arrest and that a payment is needed to set the warrant aside. The caller then directs them to a Walgreens or a CVS and instructs them to purchase gift cards.

This is a reminder that no law enforcement agency, including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, will contact citizens by phone and accept gift card payments to set warrants aside.

This case highlights the importance of being cautious with unsolicited phone calls. Here are some tips to help you avoid falling victim to similar scams:
1. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Calls. If you receive a call you weren’t expecting, be suspicious.
2. Don’t Share Personal Information. Never share sensitive information like your Social Security number, bank account details, or passwords over the phone, especially if you didn’t initiate the call.
3. Don’t Agree to Immediate Payments. Scammers often pressure victims into making immediate payments or donations, particularly through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. No legitimate company or government agency will ask for payment in these forms.
4. Watch Out for High-Pressure Tactics. If a caller urges you to make quick decisions or offers a "limited-time offer" or an "urgent problem," take a moment to think it through.
5. Be Cautious with “Free” Offers. If a call promises something that seems too good to be true, like a free prize or loan, it’s probably a scam. Always do your research before accepting any unsolicited offers.

If you are ever unsure whether a phone call is legitimate, call the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (614) 525-3333, or your local law enforcement agency, to verify.
