Ralph Paul was born on June 16, 1901 in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to being a Deputy Sheriff under his father, 46th Sheriff Harry Paul, he worked as a Deputy Clerk in the Municipal Clerk of Courts. Ralph Paul was appointed 49th Sheriff after the death of Sheriff Sandusky in 1947. In November 1948, he was elected Sheriff and re-elected in 1952 and 1956. He retired as Sheriff in 1957

On October 21, 1970, Sharon Moore became the first female to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sharon Moore began her career in 1971 as a typist but became a Deputy in 1976. She was promoted to Lieutenant on March 28th, 1982 and was once again the first female to be promoted to this rank. Unfortunately Lt. Moore died tragically on May 5th, 1983. We will always remember Lt Sharon Moore, as she paved the way for future female deputies.
Lt Bill Davey served 22+ years at the Sheriff’s Office and was assigned to the Detective Bureau. He is seen in this photo going through evidence.
Until 1975, the female deputy uniform consisted of a gray skirt. The uniform then changed to pants and after 1983 women were allowed to wear the same Stetson style hat as her male coworkers. This uniform regulation remains that way today. Pictured is Former Deputy Peggy Herdman in both uniforms.
